How do you break a habit of emotional eating?

I eat when I am stressed, bored, sad, and sometimes when I am happy. Food has become my primary coping mechanism and I am aware it is affecting my health and my relationship with my body. How do you break the pattern of turning to food for emotional regulation?

First identify the emotion before you eat. Just pausing and naming what you are feeling creates a gap between the trigger and the response. You do not have to not eat but making it a conscious choice rather than an automatic one changes the relationship.

Emotional eating fills an emotional need, not a physical one. The work is building your capacity to tolerate difficult emotions without immediately soothing them. Therapy, particularly DBT, specifically teaches these skills.
