How do you stop procrastination when it has become a lifelong pattern?

I have procrastinated my entire life and it has cost me opportunities, relationships, and self-respect. I know the standard advice about breaking tasks into small steps but it doesn't seem to work for me. Is chronic procrastination something deeper than just a bad habit?

Chronic lifelong procrastination is sometimes a symptom of undiagnosed ADHD, anxiety, or depression rather than a simple habit problem. If standard advice consistently fails it is worth exploring whether something else is driving the behavior.

Procrastination is often emotion regulation rather than time management. You avoid tasks because they generate anxiety, shame, or overwhelm. Addressing those underlying feelings is more effective than productivity systems alone.
