How do you deal with an addiction to social media and doom scrolling?

I spend 4 to 5 hours a day on my phone without meaning to. I pick it up when I am bored, anxious, or trying to avoid something. I feel worse after most scrolling sessions but I keep doing it. I have tried deleting apps but I always reinstall them. How do I actually break this habit?

The delete and reinstall cycle shows willpower alone is not enough. You need friction. Keep apps logged out so every use requires deliberate login. Move the apps to a folder on the last page of your phone. Make the unconscious habit conscious and slow it down.

Replace the habit rather than just removing it. Your phone meets a need, boredom relief, anxiety management, social connection. Find what the scroll is doing for you and give that need a different outlet.
