Why do small things sometimes trigger enormous emotional reactions?

Sometimes an insignificant event like someone's tone of voice or a small disappointment triggers a disproportionately intense emotional response in me. I know my reaction is way bigger than the situation warrants but I cannot seem to control it in the moment. Why does this happen?

The current situation is rarely the only thing being responded to. Small triggers often activate accumulated emotional residue from past experiences. You are not just reacting to what happened now but to everything similar that happened before.

This is also a sign of a depleted nervous system. When you are sleep-deprived, chronically stressed, or emotionally overwhelmed your capacity to regulate emotions decreases and small things have outsized impact. The trigger is small but the context it lands in is large.
