How do you handle feeling overwhelmed when everything seems too much?

There are periods when everything feels too much at once. The responsibilities, the noise, the demands on my attention. I feel like I cannot handle any of it and I just want to disappear. How do you get through periods of complete overwhelm without shutting down?

When overwhelmed the worst thing you can do is try to tackle everything. Do one thing. Just one. Pick the smallest most manageable item and complete only that. The act of completing something restores a small sense of control which reduces the overwhelm.

Overwhelm is a signal that your nervous system is maxed out. Before doing anything, regulate first. Slow your breathing, step outside for a few minutes, splash cold water on your face. The thinking brain comes back online when the body calms down.
