How do you quit smoking when you have tried and failed many times?

I have tried to quit smoking at least 7 times over the past 10 years. I make it weeks or even months and then something stressful happens and I am back to a pack a day. I feel like a failure and I am starting to believe I will never actually quit. Is there any approach I haven't tried?

Multiple quit attempts are the norm not the exception. Each attempt teaches you more about your triggers. The most evidence-backed approaches combine medication like varenicline with behavioral support. Neither alone is as effective as both together.

Identify your relapse trigger. For most people it is a specific emotional state, stress, boredom, or alcohol. Having a plan specifically for that trigger before it hits is more effective than a general willpower commitment.
