How do you end a long-term friendship that has become toxic?

I have a friend I have known for 12 years but the friendship has become completely one-sided, draining, and even harmful to my mental health. I want to end it but the history and guilt make it feel impossible. How do you end a long-term friendship?

You don't owe anyone a dramatic confrontation. A gradual fade is a legitimate option: be less available, less responsive, and let the friendship naturally diminish. This works especially well if they are not likely to handle a direct conversation well.

If they deserve honesty and are capable of receiving it, a direct conversation is kinder long-term. 'I think we've grown apart and I think it's better for both of us to step back' is honest without being cruel.
