How do you forgive a friend who betrayed your trust?

My closest friend told other people something deeply personal I had shared with them in confidence. I am furious and feel completely violated. They have apologized but I don't know if I can trust them again. Is it possible to forgive and rebuild after a betrayal like this?

Forgiveness is for you, not for them. It releases you from carrying the anger. But forgiveness does not require resuming the same level of trust or closeness. You can forgive and still maintain distance.

Look at their response to being caught. Genuine remorse, taking full responsibility without excuses, and changed behavior over time are signs the friendship might be worth rebuilding. Defensive justification is a sign it is not.
