Why do parents favor one child over another and how does it affect the unfavored child?

Growing up my parents very clearly favored my younger sister over me. She got more attention, more opportunities, and more forgiveness for mistakes. Now as an adult I struggle with deep feelings of not being good enough. Does parental favoritism cause lasting damage?

Yes, parental favoritism causes real and lasting psychological effects. Research consistently shows the unfavored child often struggles with lower self-esteem, anxiety, depression, and difficulty trusting others. Your feelings make complete sense.

Interestingly studies show the favored child is also negatively affected, often developing guilt, anxiety, and poor relationships with siblings. Favoritism harms the whole family system.
