How do you cope when therapy is not working or is not accessible?

I know I need professional help but I cannot afford therapy and there are very long waiting lists in my area. In the meantime I am struggling and I feel completely stuck. What do you do for your mental health when professional support is not an option right now?

Workbooks based on CBT and DBT are genuinely evidence-based and self-directed. Apps like Woebot, community mental health forums, crisis lines, and peer support groups are all imperfect but real alternatives. They are not therapy but they are not nothing.

Basic physical health has measurable effects on mental health. Consistent sleep, some daily movement, time outside, and limiting alcohol are not fixes but they reduce the floor of how bad things get. Start there while you work on accessing proper support.
