How do you know if therapy is actually working?

I have been going to therapy for 3 months and I am not sure if it is making a difference. Sometimes I feel worse after sessions. How do you know if therapy is working or if you should switch therapists?

Feeling worse after sessions is actually normal and often a sign it's working. You are processing difficult things. Progress in therapy is rarely linear.

Ask yourself: do I feel heard and respected? Do I understand why we're doing what we're doing? If you feel confused or dismissed consistently, it may be worth trying a different therapist.
