How do you manage intrusive thoughts that you know are irrational?

I get intrusive thoughts, disturbing images or scenarios that pop into my head without warning. I know they are not rational and that I would never act on them but they still terrify me. The more I try to push them away the stronger they get. What is this and how do I deal with it?

Intrusive thoughts are common and the content of them does not reflect your character or desires. The fact that they disturb you is actually evidence that they conflict with your values. Trying to suppress them increases their frequency, a phenomenon called thought rebound. The treatment is to let them pass without engaging.

What you are describing is associated with OCD and health anxiety. It responds well to a specific type of CBT called ERP. Please speak to a mental health professional because this is very treatable and does not need to control your life.
