How do you stop the cycle of negative self-talk?

My inner critic is relentless. I talk to myself in ways I would never speak to another person. I call myself stupid, worthless, and pathetic over small mistakes. I know it is harmful but the voice is automatic and I cannot seem to quiet it. How do you change your inner dialogue?

Notice the voice without immediately believing it. Labeling it, there is the critic again, creates small but meaningful distance. You are the observer of the thought, not the thought itself. That distinction gives you room to respond rather than react.

Ask yourself: would I say this to a friend? If the answer is no then apply the same standard to yourself. Self-compassion is not self-indulgence. It is treating yourself with the basic decency you would offer someone you care about.
