How do you build discipline when motivation always runs out?

I start things with enormous motivation and then the excitement fades and I cannot maintain the behavior. I have watched myself start and abandon fitness routines, creative projects, and learning goals more times than I can count. How do you build genuine discipline that does not depend on feeling motivated?

Motivation is an emotion and emotions are temporary. Discipline is a system. The goal is to design your environment and schedule so the behavior requires as little motivation as possible. Remove decisions, remove friction, make the right choice the easy choice.

Lower the bar until it feels almost embarrassing. Five minutes of exercise counts. One paragraph written counts. Showing up imperfectly builds the identity of someone who shows up. That identity eventually carries you when motivation is absent.
