What is the difference between being selfish and having self-respect?

When I say no to people or put my needs first I am often told I am being selfish. But I feel like I am just finally setting boundaries. How do you know if you are being appropriately self-respecting or actually selfish?

Selfishness is prioritizing yourself at the expense of others. Self-respect is prioritizing yourself without intentionally harming others. Saying no is almost never selfish.

Anyone who calls you selfish for having boundaries is usually someone who benefited from you having none.
