Why does loneliness feel physically painful?

I have been going through a very lonely period in my life and it genuinely feels like physical pain sometimes. A heavy aching feeling in my chest. I thought loneliness was just an emotion but it seems to affect my whole body. Is loneliness actually physically painful?

Yes, loneliness activates the same brain regions as physical pain. We evolved as deeply social creatures and social exclusion was historically life-threatening. Your brain treats prolonged loneliness as a survival threat.

Research also shows loneliness suppresses the immune system and increases cortisol levels. The physical symptoms you feel are real biological responses, not just in your head.
