How do you deal with feeling lonely in a crowded room?

I went to a party last weekend surrounded by people and felt more lonely than I ever do when I am actually alone. I can be in a room full of people having conversations and feel completely invisible and disconnected. Why does this happen?

This is because loneliness is not about the number of people around you, it's about the quality of connection. Being surrounded by people you cannot authentically connect with can actually amplify the feeling of isolation.

It often happens when you feel like you are performing rather than being yourself. You are physically present but emotionally absent. Fewer, deeper conversations are more nourishing than many surface ones.
