How do you help someone who is isolated and refuses help?

My elderly neighbor lives completely alone and seems deeply isolated. When I try to check on them they insist they are fine and seem to resent the intrusion. But I am worried about them. How do you help someone who is lonely but refuses connection?

Don't make help the point of the interaction. Instead of checking in, find a reason to interact that gives them something to offer you. Ask for advice, borrow something, share something. It preserves their dignity and opens a door.

Chronic isolation can sometimes involve depression or cognitive decline. If you are genuinely concerned about their safety, contacting social services or their family may be appropriate even if unwelcome.
