Is it unhealthy to prefer being alone most of the time?

I genuinely prefer being alone. I enjoy my own company, I find socializing draining, and I am happiest when I have long stretches of time by myself. People keep telling me this is unhealthy and I should force myself to be more social. Are they right?

Preferring solitude is not unhealthy. Introversion is a normal personality trait. The difference between healthy solitude and unhealthy isolation is whether you are choosing it freely or using it to avoid anxiety or connection.

Research does suggest some social connection is important for health. But quality matters far more than quantity. One or two deep relationships is more protective than many shallow ones.
