How do you deal with body dysmorphia and constant appearance checking?

I spend hours a day examining my appearance, checking mirrors, and trying to fix perceived flaws that other people tell me they cannot see. I know intellectually that my perception might be distorted but the compulsion to check is overwhelming. What is this and how do I get help?

What you are describing sounds like Body Dysmorphic Disorder which is a real and diagnosable condition. It responds well to treatment, particularly CBT and sometimes medication. Please speak to a mental health professional because this is very treatable.

Reducing mirror checking is part of the treatment. Each time you check you are feeding the anxiety rather than resolving it. A therapist can help you gradually reduce this behavior in a structured way.
