How do you deal with a parent who never apologizes or admits they were wrong?

My mother has never once apologized to me for anything in my entire life. When I try to bring up things from my childhood that hurt me she either denies they happened, minimizes them, or turns it around and makes herself the victim. How do you heal from this?

You may need to grieve the apology you will never get. Waiting for a parent who lacks this capacity to finally acknowledge your pain keeps you stuck. Your healing cannot depend on their admission.

Lower your expectation for the relationship rather than cutting it off entirely if that feels too extreme. You can have a limited, managed relationship with someone you no longer expect empathy from.
