Why do people stay in situations they know are bad for them?

I have been in a job I hate for 3 years and I know I should leave. My friend has been in a bad relationship for years and knows it is not right. Why do people so often stay in situations they consciously know are bad for them? What is the psychology behind this?

The known bad feels safer than the unknown good. Loss aversion is a powerful cognitive bias where we weight potential losses much more heavily than equivalent gains. Leaving any situation means losing certainty, identity, and familiarity even when those things are not serving us.

Sunk cost fallacy also plays a role. The more time, energy, or identity you have invested in something the harder it is to walk away even when continuing is clearly wrong. We do not want to waste what we already put in.
