What makes some people more resilient than others?

I have a colleague who has been through objectively terrible circumstances and seems completely fine while I struggle to cope with much smaller difficulties. What actually makes some people psychologically resilient? Is it something you are born with or can it be developed?

Resilience is largely learned. Key factors include having at least one stable supportive relationship in childhood, a sense of agency over your life, and the ability to find meaning in adversity. All of these can be developed in adulthood.

Resilient people are not people who do not feel pain. They are people who have learned that pain is survivable and that their responses matter. That belief, that your actions affect outcomes, is the core of psychological resilience.
