Is radical honesty a good idea in relationships?

I read about radical honesty where you say exactly what you think and feel at all times with no filter. Some people swear by it but to me it sounds like it would be deeply hurtful. Is total transparency actually healthy in a relationship or does some filtering make things better?

Most relationship researchers distinguish between honesty and radical transparency. Sharing feelings and needs honestly is healthy. Sharing every passing critical thought is not honesty, it is a lack of impulse control dressed as virtue.

The goal is emotional honesty about things that matter, not verbal reporting of every thought. 'I felt hurt when you said that' is radical honesty done right. 'I find your friend more attractive than you' is just thoughtless.
