How do you know if someone is genuinely trustworthy or just good at seeming trustworthy?

I have been burned multiple times by people who seemed completely trustworthy at first. They were warm, consistent, and reliable until suddenly they were not. I am now suspicious of everyone and I don't know how to trust my own judgment anymore. How do you tell real trustworthiness from a performance?

Watch how they behave when there is nothing to gain. How do they treat waitstaff, how do they talk about people who are not in the room, do they keep small promises. Character shows up in low-stakes moments not high-stakes ones.

Time is the best test. Trust is earned through consistency over months and years not through impressive first impressions. Anyone can perform trustworthiness for a few weeks.
