How do you handle a difficult or abusive manager?

My manager yells at team members, humiliates people in meetings, and takes out their stress on us. HR has done nothing meaningful about multiple complaints. I need this job but the environment is damaging my mental health. What are my options?

Document every incident with dates, times, and witnesses. Go above HR if they are ineffective, directly to their manager or to an employment lawyer to understand your rights. Simultaneously start job searching because no job is worth your mental health.

Minimize your exposure as much as possible. Communicate in writing, keep interactions brief and professional, and build relationships with other managers who can be references. Protect yourself while you plan your exit.
