Why do people play hard to get and does it actually work?

I have been told to play hard to get with someone I like but it feels fake and manipulative to me. I am a direct person and pretending not to be interested when I am feels dishonest. Does playing hard to get actually work or is it just a game?

Research actually shows mild unavailability increases attraction because of uncertainty. But there is a difference between being genuinely busy and having your own life versus deliberately ignoring someone to manipulate them.

Playing hard to get works short term but attracts people who like the chase, not people who like you. If you want something real, just be real.
