Is it too late to start over at 40?

I am 40 years old and I feel like I have spent two decades in the wrong career, the wrong relationship, and building the wrong life. I want to start over completely but I am terrified that it is too late and that I have wasted my best years. Is starting over at 40 realistic?

People who change careers, relationships, and entire life directions at 40 have decades ahead of them. The fear that it is too late is almost always greater than the actual constraint. Many people report their 40s and 50s as their most fulfilling decades.

The years behind you are not wasted. You know yourself much better now than you did at 20. That self-knowledge is an enormous advantage in building a life that actually fits you.
