Is it selfish to prioritize your own happiness over others expectations?

I have spent most of my life making choices based on what my family and community expected of me. I am now considering making a choice that would make me genuinely happy but would disappoint many people who care about me. Is it selfish to choose your own happiness?

There is a meaningful difference between selfishness, which disregards others' wellbeing, and self-prioritization, which acknowledges your own. Choosing a life that genuinely fits you is not the same as harming others. Disappointing people is not the same as hurting them.

People who live entirely by others' expectations often become resentful and empty over time. That resentment eventually affects the very people they were trying to please. Taking care of your own life is not opposed to caring about others.
