How do you support a friend or family member who comes out as transgender?

My younger sibling recently came out as transgender. I want to be supportive but I am honestly confused and have questions I am afraid to ask in case they seem offensive. How do I be a genuinely good ally without saying the wrong thing?

Use their name and pronouns consistently and correct yourself quickly if you slip without making a big deal of it. Ask what they need from you rather than assuming. Most trans people appreciate questions asked in good faith far more than silence or avoidance.

Educate yourself on the basics so your sibling does not have to do all the emotional labor of explaining their identity. There are many excellent resources online. Show up, stay curious, and prioritize their comfort over your confusion.
