How do you stop feeling shame around your sexuality?

I grew up in an environment where sexuality was treated as something shameful and dirty. As an adult I carry enormous shame around my own desires and sexual identity. This shame affects my relationships and my ability to be present in intimate moments. How do you unlearn sexual shame?

Sexual shame is almost always learned and what is learned can be unlearned, though it takes time. Therapy with someone who specializes in sexuality is often the most direct path. Reading and normalizing conversations about sexuality also help dismantle the secrecy that shame requires.

Notice the specific beliefs underneath the shame. Often it is things like 'desire is dirty' or 'good people don't want this.' Examining where those beliefs came from and whether you actually choose to hold them as an adult can begin to loosen their grip.
