Is it normal for sexual desire to decrease after years in a relationship?

My partner and I used to have a very active sex life but after 5 years together our frequency has dropped significantly. We are still in love and happy otherwise but neither of us initiates as much. Is this a normal progression or is it a sign something is wrong?

Completely normal and extremely common. The neurochemistry of new love, specifically dopamine and norepinephrine, naturally fades over time. Long-term desire requires more intentionality and novelty than early relationship desire does.

The absence of spontaneous desire does not mean the absence of sexual interest. Many couples in long relationships shift from spontaneous to responsive desire, where interest follows initiation rather than preceding it. That is a normal adaptation.
