How do you stay consistent with healthy habits long term?

I can maintain healthy habits for a few weeks or even months but I always fall off eventually. Missing one day turns into missing a week and then the habit is gone. How do people maintain healthy habits over years rather than weeks?

Never miss twice. Missing once is an accident. Missing twice is starting a new habit of not doing the thing. The rule is not perfection but rapid recovery. One missed day is irrelevant. Seven missed days is a pattern.

Design for your worst day not your best day. Your habit should be small enough that you can do it when you are tired, stressed, and unmotivated. If it requires your best self to complete it will not survive contact with reality.
