How do you handle someone who constantly interrupts you?

There is a person in my life, a family member and also a colleague, who constantly interrupts me mid-sentence. I lose my train of thought and feel completely unheard. I have tried pausing and waiting but they just fill the silence. How do you address chronic interrupting?

Name it in the moment without accusation. 'Hold on, I wasn't finished.' Then continue without pausing to see if they respond. If it is chronic you can address it separately: 'I have noticed you often jump in before I finish. Can we work on that?'

Some chronic interrupters are not aware they do it. A kind direct observation outside the conversation is often more effective than in-the-moment corrections which can feel like attacks even when delivered calmly.
