How do you navigate small talk when you find it exhausting and pointless?

I hate small talk. I find chitchat about weather and weekend plans completely draining and meaningless. But I also understand it is socially necessary and that refusing to engage makes me seem cold or arrogant. How do you get through small talk without it feeling like torture?

Treat small talk as a bridge not a destination. Its purpose is to create enough safety for deeper conversation. Instead of tolerating it endlessly use it to find an opening: 'That reminds me, what do you think about...' and steer somewhere real.

Ask slightly deeper questions than expected. Instead of 'how was your weekend' try 'what was the best part of your week?' It requires no more time but gets to something real faster and most people respond warmly to the upgrade.
