Why are humans so resistant to changing their minds even with evidence?

I have had arguments where I provided clear evidence for my position and the other person simply refused to engage with it. I have also caught myself doing the same thing. Why do humans find it so hard to update their beliefs even when presented with compelling contradicting evidence?

Beliefs are not just information, they are identity. Changing a deeply held belief feels like a threat to the self which triggers the same defensive response as a physical threat. Evidence that contradicts your worldview is processed as danger not data.

Confirmation bias means we actively seek information that confirms existing beliefs and discount information that challenges them. This is not stupidity, it is a feature of how the brain manages cognitive load. Updating every belief constantly would be exhausting.
